Congressmen Rob Wittman and Eugene Vindman have introduced the bipartisan Support Military Families Act to support military spouses working for the federal government. The proposed legislation aims to exempt these spouses from the federal return-to-work mandate, allowing them to retain their jobs while supporting their families.
The bill was introduced following concerns from Virginians affected by the mandate. Congressman Wittman stated, "Our military families make great sacrifices in support of their loved ones in the Armed Forces — for which we are forever grateful for — and should not come at the expense of employability, financial stability, or personal fulfillment." He added that a constituent from Yorktown highlighted how remote work has enabled her to maintain her federal career despite frequent relocations.
Congressman Vindman, with 25 years of Army service, remarked on his experience with military families' sacrifices. He emphasized that "supporting military families is not a partisan issue; it is an American issue." A constituent from Orange County contacted his office about facing difficult choices due to the return-to-office mandate.
Both congressmen believe this legislation will strengthen national security by supporting military families and retaining experienced staff in federal agencies.
