Congressman Rob Wittman, vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) and chairman of the Tactical Air and Land Forces (TAL) Subcommittee, has issued a statement in response to the U.S. Army's decision to terminate the development of the Future Attack and Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA).

In his statement, Congressman Wittman expressed the need for Congress to scrutinize the Army's aviation program changes. He plans to hold a hearing in the spring to assess the administration's proposal, the impact on the industrial base, and the divestment of legacy platforms. Wittman emphasized that the Army must provide an Analysis of Alternatives (AOA) document on FARA, as required by a provision in the FY24 NDAA.

"The Army must expedite delivery of this document to Congress to inform our work in the FY25 NDAA and appropriations bills," said Wittman.

The Army's decision to end the development of FARA raises questions about the future of the service's aviation attack and reconnaissance mission-set. Wittman is particularly interested in understanding how the Army plans to address this mission-set without FARA, as well as the vision for future investments and the use of expended funds.

Wittman's TAL Subcommittee oversees a wide range of modernization programs that have a significant impact on the future capabilities of the U.S. military's ground and air forces, as well as munitions stockpiles.

The congressman's statement reflects the importance of transparency and accountability in the decision-making process regarding the Army's aviation programs. By holding a hearing and reviewing the AOA document, Wittman aims to ensure that Congress has the necessary information to make informed decisions in the FY25 NDAA and appropriations bills.

As the Army moves forward with its aviation rebalancing, it is crucial to consider the potential implications for the industrial base and the overall readiness of the military. Congressman Wittman's commitment to overseeing these developments underscores his dedication to national security and the well-being of our armed forces.
