 No. 22 Charleston took a shot from UNCW in the closing minutes and responded to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 16 games and get the Cougars off to the best 18-game start in CAA history Wednesday night.
 
Elsewhere around the league, Hofstra moved into a tie for second, North Carolina A&T came back in the second half to win on the road, and Delaware and William & Mary evened their league ledgers with home victories.
 
22/24 Charleston 71, UNCW 69
Ryan Larson’s three-point play with 93 seconds remaining put No. 22 Charleston back in front for good and the Cougars made a pair of stops in the closing seconds to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to 16 games and snap the Seahawks’ of 13. Charleston (17-1, 5-0) led by 11 at the half before UNCW (14-4, 4-1) battled back to take a four-point lead on an 8-0 run supplied in total by Maleeck Harden-Hayes to move in front 66-62 with 3:38 to play. Charleston would hold UNCW to one made basket the rest of the way to close out the game on a 9-3 stretch. Dalton Bolon led Charleston with 16 points, while three other Cougars – Larson (13), Ante Brzovic (13), and Ben Burnham (12) – were in double figures. Jamarii Thomas and Trazarien White led UNCW with 16 points each. Charleston’s 17-1 start is the best in CAA men’s basketball history, surpassing the 1985-86 Richmond squad that opened the year 16-1.
 
North Carolina A&T 80, Elon 71
North Carolina A&T authored a second half comeback to win on the road in the first battle of regional foes as CAA members. The Aggies trailed by as many as 14 points before outscoring Elon 41-25 in the second half to improve to 2-3 in league play. Marcus Watson tallied 20 points and eight rebounds to lead North Carolina A&T, which outrebounded Elon 49-34 with 12 from Austin Johnson and nine from Duncan Powell. Torrence Watson led five Elon players in double figures with 15 points.
 
Hofstra 77, Monmouth 57
Hofstra withstood an opening attack from visiting Monmouth before holding the Hawks to 42 points in the game’s final 32 minutes to climb into a tie for second in the CAA at 4-1. The Pride shot 56% for the game and 59% in the second half while knocking down eight threes, including four from Jaquan Carlos. Tyler Thomas and Warren Williams were even with a game-high 18 points, while Carlos and Aaron Estrada scored 12 each. Hofstra’s bench added in 27 of the Pride’s 77 points. Tahron Allen tallied a team-high 13 points for Monmouth.
 
William & Mary 81, Hampton 65
Noah Collier led the way with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds and William & Mary shot 59% from the field to improve to 2-2 in league play. The Tribe led 20-19 with 9:18 to play in the first half before Gabe Dorsey fueled a 14-5 stretch to put W&M in front by 10. Collier was one of four Tribe starters in double figures and joined by Anders Nelson (15), Dorsey (13), and Ben Wight (13). W&M enjoyed a 38-21 advantage on the glass and scored 34 points in the paint. Deuce Dean led all scorers with 21 points for Hampton.
 
Delaware 72, Towson 59
Three Blue Hens were in double figures to lead Delaware to a home victory over the defending CAA champion. All five starters played 34+ minutes for Delaware with Christian Ray scoring 18, Ebby Asamoah tallying 17, and Jyáre Davis adding 16. Delaware shot 51% from the field while holding Towson to 35%. Nicolas Timberlake led Towson with 13 points, while Christian May added 11 off the bench. Both teams were without leading contributors in their backcourt with Jameer Nelson Jr. absent for Delaware and Cam Holden and Jason Gibson out of action for Towson.
