The first six-game CAA hoops Sunday did not disappoint as four teams – Drexel, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T and Stony Brook – moved to 2-0 in league play, Hampton earned its first-ever CAA victory and Northeastern picked up its first conference win this season. Eight teams had at least three double-figure scorers, and six players recorded double-doubles this afternoon.
Hampton 57, Elon 54 | Box Score
Hampton made its league-play debut, earning the program’s first-ever CAA victory with a 57-54 win over Elon. The Lady Pirates pitched an impressive defensive effort in the first half, limiting the Phoenix to 14 points on 20.0 percent shooting as Hampton took a 28-14 lead into the break. Elon battled back in the second half, climbing within one point on multiple occasions, but Hampton withstood the Phoenix comeback effort. Nylah Young paced all scorers with 16 points, while Madison Buford and Victoria Mason added 14 points apiece for Hampton. Ajia James and Bria Harmon reached double figures for the Phoenix off the bench as James tallied a season-high 15 points, and Harmon matched her season-best with 13.
North Carolina A&T 66, Charleston 58 | Box Score
North Carolina A&T remained unbeaten in conference play, defeating Charleston 66-58 to win its first two league games as a CAA member. The Aggies fell behind 20-14 after the first quarter but answered the call in the second, outscoring Charleston 16-7 to take the lead at the break. After a stalemate in the third, North Carolina A&T secured the win in the fourth. Jazmin Harris paced the Aggies with 18 points and 12 rebounds for her third straight double-double, while Maleia Bracone added 16 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks in an all-around effort. Anika McGarity led three Cougars in double figures with 18 points, and Alexis Andrews recorded her first career double-double, contributing 10 points with a career-best 13 rebounds.
Drexel 75, Towson 67 | Box Score
Drexel improved to 2-0 in CAA play following a 75-67 win over Towson. The Dragons shot 46.6 percent from the floor, and their defense limited Towson to 37.5 percent shooting as Drexel earned a hard-fought victory. A balanced Drexel effort saw three Dragons reach double figures as Keishana Washington and Grace O’Neill led the way with 19 points apiece. It is the 47th straight game for Washington in double figures, while it marks a new career high for O’Neill. Hetta Saatman also recorded a new career-high with 15 points, and Maura Hendrixson set a Drexel program record with 14 assists. Kylie Kornegay-Lucas paced Towson with a game-high 23 points, adding six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
Stony Brook 67, Hofstra 55 | Box Score
Stony Brook stayed perfect in its CAA tenure with a 67-55 win over Hofstra to claim Long Island bragging rights. The fourth quarter made the difference as Stony Brook outscored Hofstra 19-4 frame after trailing by three entering the final 10 minutes. The Seawolves held the Pride to one field goal and 10.0 percent shooting from the floor in the final quarter. Sherese Pittman tallied eight of her team-high 18 points in the fourth quarter and added 11 rebounds for her third double-double this season. Annie Warren (16), Shamarla King (13) and Daishai Almond (10) joined Pittman in double figures as the Stony Brook starting rotation accounted for 65 points on the afternoon. Brandy Thomas was impressive for the Pride, recording a season-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting with seven rebounds.
Northeastern 71, William & Mary 57 | Box Score
Northeastern started the New Year with its first CAA victory this season, topping William & Mary 71-57. Trailing for much of the first half, the Huskies ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run, capped with a three at the buzzer by Derin Erdogan, to take a one-point lead into halftime. Northeastern carried the momentum into the third, outscoring the Tribe 27-19 in the next frame to create separation. Two Huskies recorded double-doubles as Halle Idowu tallied season-highs with 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Deja Bristol added season-bests with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Riley Casey paced William & Mary with 14 points and was joined in double figures by Sydney Wagner with 12.
Monmouth 80, Delaware 60 | Box Score
Monmouth moved to 2-0 in its first two CAA contests after an impressive 80-60 win over the defending conference champions. A high scoring first 20 minutes saw the Hawks take a 41-39 lead over Delaware at the break; however, a fourth-quarter outburst sealed the game for Monmouth as they outscored the Blue Hens 27-11 in the final frame. Four Hawks reached double figures, led by Lucy Thomas with 19 off the bench, who went 7-of-9 from the floor with five rebounds. Bri Tinsley added 15 points, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter, with eight assists, six rebounds and two steals. Makayla Pippin recorded her fourth double-double this season with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens.
