Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) hosted an informational mental health seminar in Williamsburg, emphasizing the importance of mental health resources for the community. Wittman, a member of the Congressional Mental Health Caucus and Military Mental Health Caucus, expressed his dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in Virginia’s First District.
"It is imperative that we collaborate across local, state, and federal governments to inject adequate mental health resources into our health systems," Wittman stated during the seminar. He thanked the mental and behavioral health professionals from Colonial Behavioral Health, Riverside Health System, and the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters for their participation in engaging with the community.
Throughout his time in Congress, Wittman has been a strong advocate for mental health funding and resources. He has supported various initiatives such as the National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative, Children’s Mental Health Services program, and grants for Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics. Wittman also voted for legislation like the Support for Patients and Communities Reauthorization Act, which focuses on mental and behavioral health education and training.
In addition, Wittman cosponsored bills like the Mental Health Access Improvement Act, the Timely Mental Health for Foster Youth Act, and the CARES Act, which have provisions to improve access to mental health services, especially for vulnerable populations. The CARES Act, for example, expanded telehealth services for mental health and substance abuse, reauthorized Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, and allocated $425 million for suicide prevention and mental health priorities.
Wittman's efforts demonstrate his commitment to addressing mental health issues and ensuring that individuals have access to the necessary resources and support. With collaborative initiatives and continued advocacy, he aims to contribute to building a healthier and safer community in Virginia's First District.
