Congressman Rob Wittman, along with Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine, and Representatives Jennifer McClellan, Bobby Scott, Abigail Spanberger, Bob Good, and Jen Kiggans, expressed concerns over the United States Postal Service's handling of mail services in Virginia. In response to the USPS Inspector General report on the Richmond Regional Processing and Distribution Center (RPDC) in Sandston, the lawmakers emphasized the need for improved coordination and resources at the facility.
Wittman stated, "It couldn’t be clearer that USPS has not been providing reliable service to Virginians, and we’ve been pressing for answers." The report highlighted issues such as mail falling off conveyor belts, poor synchronization between processing machines and mail transport schedules, and questions about the efficiency of the RPDC model. The USPS Inspector General made 10 recommendations for improvement to address these issues.
The congressman's efforts to address mail delays included sending letters to the Postmaster General, meeting with USPS officials, and demanding answers regarding unusable cancer test samples due to mail delays. Wittman also visited the RPDC in Sandston to witness the challenges firsthand.
The lawmakers expressed their commitment to working with USPS to implement the recommendations in the IG report and ensure timely mail delivery for Virginians.
