Today, Congressman Rob Wittman, vice chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, shared a critical response to President Biden's defense budget for Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25).
Wittman expressed strong concerns about the budget, stating that it is disconnected from the current global security environment. He emphasized the need for the U.S. defense budget to address the escalating threats posed by countries like China, Russia, and Iran.
Regarding the Navy, Wittman highlighted President Biden's proposal to decrease the Navy force structure from 296 ships to 287 in FY25, stating that it could have detrimental effects on the naval fleet and the industrial base in Hampton Roads.
Wittman also criticized the reduction in Air Force combat power, pointing out that the total aircraft inventory is set to decrease by almost 130 airframes. He raised alarm over the termination of F-15EX production and the underfunding of F-35 modernization efforts, which could impact the readiness of the Air Force.
Furthermore, Wittman expressed concerns about the lack of funding for the Defense Innovation Unit, stating that it falls short of accelerating the adoption of emerging technologies for the U.S. military.
In closing, Wittman outlined his priorities for the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act, which include strengthening the shipbuilding industrial base, enhancing aircraft capacity and modernization, increasing production of long-range fires, and investing in emerging technologies to address threats from foreign adversaries and support U.S. warfighters.
Wittman's statement underscores the importance of adequately funding and equipping the U.S. military to effectively respond to evolving security challenges.
