WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD NETS NATIONAL ACADEMIC HONORS

The VCU Women's Track & Field program has once again been named an All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), while a pair of Rams earned additional honors.

The USTFCCCA bestows the honor on teams which post a 3.0 grade-point-average (on a 4.0 scale) or better. It's the eighth straight year the VCU Women's Track & Field program has claimed the USTFCCCA academic citation under Head Coach Jon Riley. The Rams, who captured an Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Championship in 2022, posted a 3.19 collective GPA in 2021-22.

Additionally, VCU graduating senior Makayla McGowan (Nokesville, Va.) and rising sophomore Gudrun Hallgrimsdottir (Hvanneyri, Iceland) were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Athletes for their efforts in the classroom.

McGowan, who majored in Fashion Merchandising with a minor in Business, was a three-time Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic honoree and was recently named an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee. She was twice named Most Outstanding Field Performer of the A-10 Outdoor Championships.

Hallgrimsdottir, the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer of the league's outdoor championships in May, set the program record in the hammer throw on multiple occasions during the spring. She is majoring in Biology.
