ICON A5 Visits Girl Scouts at Lunenburg Airport

49

The ICON A5 Introduction to Flight Team traveled to Lunenburg County Airport on Sunday, May 22 to visit with a girl scout group as part of a weekend of aviation themed activities.

The Girl Scouts Aviation Introduction and Exploration event involved speakers from multiple aviation career paths. Throughout the weekend, girl scouts from Chester, Va. learned from an airline pilot, flight attendant and airport manager. A museum curator also spoke about aviation history in Virginia, while an aircraft mechanic and inspector educated the girl scouts about aviation maintenance.

Public Relations and Education Manager Betty Wilson provided information about scholarships as well as upcoming Women Can Fly events that are happening across the Commonwealth. Each girl scout had the opportunity to sit in the ICON A5 and operate the controls while Public Relations and Education Coordinator David Halstead explained how airplanes fly and answered questions. All participants were given wooden balsa airplanes to build and fly as well as aviation calendars to take home.

“It was cool because the girls could see the airplane, feel it and sit in it, while the team talked about the ICON and what it did,” event organizer Lori Bond said. “We learned that the airplane could go in water as well. It added another angle for them to learn and think about.”

The ICON A5 is an amphibious light sport aircraft that the DOAV PR and Education Team take across the Commonwealth of Virginia to educate youth about aviation. For more information on how to get this free program to your school or local airport, email Betty Wilson.
