Congressman Rob Wittman of Virginia’s 1st district has expressed concerns after a significant wastewater spill in the Potomac River. The incident, caused by the failure of the Potomac Interceptor along the Clara Barton Parkway in Montgomery County, Maryland, resulted in nearly 243.5 million gallons of wastewater entering the river.

In a letter addressed to Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, Wittman highlighted the potential downstream effects on the Chesapeake Bay and stressed risks to water quality, marine life, and Virginia’s seafood and tourism sectors.

“This unprecedented wastewater spill poses serious threats to regional ecosystems and important operations that drive Virginians’ way of life and economy,” said Rep. Wittman. “As vice chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee and co-chair of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Task Force, I am committed to ensuring a full accounting of what occurred, immediate mitigation of environmental impacts, and long-term safeguards to prevent this from happening again.”

Wittman has also been in contact with federal agencies including FEMA, EPA, and the National Park Service to evaluate response efforts and determine if further federal assistance is needed for protection measures in the Bay area.

The Potomac Interceptor is an essential system serving communities across Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The Potomac River flows into the Chesapeake Bay and serves as a main source of drinking water for many residents. Officials have noted that untreated sewage from such spills can pollute waterways, damage marine habitats, and threaten both public health and wildlife due to exposure to harmful bacteria and pollutants.

Rob Wittman has represented Virginia’s 1st district in Congress since 2007 after succeeding Jo Ann Davis. He previously served on local government bodies including the Virginia House of Delegates and Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors. Born in Washington, D.C., Wittman graduated from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in 1981.
