UNCW, Delaware and Elon Earn Victories In Quarterfinals Of CAA Men’s Tennis Championship

UNCW, Delaware and Elon earned victories in the quarterfinals of the 2022 CAA Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.

Elon advances to play top-seeded William & Mary in Saturday’s first semifinal at 11 a.m., followed by UNCW against Delaware at 2 p.m.

Defending champion and No. 2 seed UNCW moved to the semifinals for the 13th straight tournament by beating No. 7 Hofstra, 4-0. The Seahawks claimed the doubles point following a 6-2 triumph by Davide Innocenti and Reece Falck over Josh Reynolds and Kaita Odani at No. 2 and a 6-2 win by Dillon Gooch and Behkzod Rasamatov over Bo Cautaerts and Ostap Kovalenko at No. 1.
 
UNCW closed the match out with three singles victories. At No. 4, the Seahawks’ Gabe Hurtado rolled past Matthew Garcia, 6-1, 6-2. Falck battled past Cautaerts, 6-4, 7-6 (5) at No. 1, and UNCW clinched the match when Harold Huens rallied over Josh Reynolds, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.
 
Delaware reached the semifinals of the CAA Men’s Tennis Championship for the first time ever with a hard-fought 4-1 triumph against No. 6 Drexel. The Blue Hens grabbed an early 1-0 lead after a competitive doubles point. Delaware’s Liam Hedlund and Alex Gluck bested Juan Sanchez and Matvey Radionov, 6-3, at No. 3, but Drexel pulled even with a 6-2 win at No. 1 by Alan Jesudason and Alex De Sousa over James Wilkinson and Pierce Gilheany. The point was decided at No. 2 as the Blue Hens’ tandem of Gui Valdoleiros and Pascal Wagemaker beat Sanil Jagtiani and Djordje Janackovic, 6-2.
 
The clash was even more competitive in singles with three matches going to a third set. Drexel drew even at 1-1 when Radionov topped Tobia Sonne, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. The Blue Hens won a pair of tiebreakers to move ahead 3-1, as Luis Molina got by Jesudason, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 3 and Wilkinson edged Xandy Hammitt, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (8-6) at No. 1. With the three remaining matches in the deciding set, Delaware’s Valdoleiros beat Sanchez, 3-6, 6-2, 4-2 (ret.) after Sanchez couldn’t continue due to an injury.
 
Fourth-seeded Elon (14-8) advanced to the semifinals for the seventh consecutive season with a 4-0 victory over No. 5. Charleston (9-9). The Phoenix got off to a strong start in doubles. The No. 3 team of Nick Campbell and Nicholas Condos posted a 6-1 win over Andre Limon and Noah Borges, and the No. 2 duo of Camilo Ponce and Kyle Frankel secured the point by defeating Brolin Dorsey and Johnny Wang, 6-2.
 
Elon continued the momentum into singles with a trio of straight-set wins. Campbell topped Robby Krick, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 and Daniel Martin followed quickly by topping Matias Gaedechens, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3. The match ended at the No. 4 slot as Ponce got past Borges, 6-3, 6-2.
