Today, Congressman Rob Wittman of Virginia's 1st District voted in favor of the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act. This decision aims to maintain government operations, fund essential services for Americans, and address the national debt.
"Funding the federal government is a constitutional obligation — today I voted to uphold that duty," stated Congressman Wittman. "This straightforward continuing resolution ensures the government remains open and working for Americans. It funds veterans’ services, includes the largest pay raise for junior enlisted troops in over 40 years, and maintains critical services for our constituents like roads, parks, child care, water projects, infrastructure improvements, scientific research, and job training. A continuing resolution is not what I wanted, but shutting down the government is irresponsible and wastes taxpayer dollars. I remain committed to fixing our broken government funding process."
The key provisions of this act include extending current discretionary funding levels through September 30, 2025. This extension prevents a government shutdown while ensuring essential services continue without increasing taxpayer spending. The act also guarantees full funding for veterans' healthcare services and benefits while enhancing defense investments with significant pay raises for junior enlisted troops.
Additionally, it safeguards Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid recipients from potential disruptions caused by a shutdown. Increased funding has been allocated for air traffic control priorities compared to FY24. Furthermore, it fully funds programs providing nutrition assistance to mothers, infants, and children.
Congressman Wittman has consistently pushed legislation aimed at reforming the budget process:
- No Budget, No Pay Act: Members' salaries are withheld until a budget is passed.
- Stay on Schedule (S.O.S) Resolution: Congress cannot adjourn for August recess until all 12 funding bills are passed.
- Inaction Has Consequences Act: Salaries of Members of Congress are withheld if regular funding bills are not timely passed.
