WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Rob Wittman’s (VA-01) Protecting Access For Hunters and Anglers Act has successfully passed the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill aims to prevent the banning of lead ammunition or tackle on federal lands and waters unless such regulations align with state law and scientific support.
Expressing his dissatisfaction with the Biden administration's attempts to limit access to traditional hunting and fishing gear on federal territories, Congressman Wittman, a dedicated hunter and fisherman, emphasized the significance of affordable lead ammunition. He stated, "Effective environmental stewardship and wildlife conservation rely on the valuable contributions of our hunters and anglers, and affordable lead ammunition and tackle are crucial to reducing financial barriers that limit accessibility for sportsmen and women."
The legislation, reintroduced by Congressman Wittman in January 2023 and supported by 50 cosponsors, emphasizes the importance of maintaining access to lands and waters for conservation purposes. House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman commended Wittman's efforts, highlighting the bill's role in ensuring states adhere to sound scientific principles and keep ammunition and tackle costs manageable.
The bill's passage comes in response to concerns raised after the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service engaged in settlement negotiations with activist litigants regarding the use of traditional ammunition on federal lands. The potential ban on lead ammunition and tackle, as proposed by the Biden administration, raised worries about increased financial barriers for hunters and anglers due to the cost-effectiveness and availability of lead ammunition.
Supported by organizations such as the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, American Sportfishing Association, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, National Shooting Sports Foundation, and Safari Club International, the Protecting Access For Hunters and Anglers Act advocates for the preservation of accessibility and affordability in the hunting and angling community.
The bill's passage through the House marks a significant step in safeguarding the interests of hunters and anglers across the nation, with hopes for further progress as it moves to the Senate for consideration.
