Spanberger’s Office Returns More Than $27 Million In Federal Benefits to Virginians

Spanberger’s Office Returns More Than $27 Million In Federal Benefits to Virginians

Just over one month after reaching $22 million returned, U.S. Representative Abigail Spanberger today announced that her office has surpassed $27 million in federal casework funds returned to residents of Virginia’s Seventh District. In 2022 alone, Spanberger’s office has returned nearly $16.5 million — including more than $4 million in delayed tax returns secured for a Virginia business last week.

Casework dollars are secured and returned by fighting for backlogged benefits and advocating for fair treatment on behalf of constituents having issues with a federal agency, program, or benefit. Spanberger’s office has focused on typical casework concerns, like Social Security, Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, and Medicare, while also adapting to increased needs — such as securing delayed Internal Revenue Service (IRS) refunds.

Since taking office on January 3, 2019, Spanberger’s office has closed 5,853 cases for Virginians and returned $27,007,370.

“I am thrilled that my team and I have been able to return more than $27 million in backlogged federal dollars to Virginians since we took office,” said Spanberger. “We are proud to serve our neighbors in the Seventh District and will always do all that we can to get answers from federal agencies and help secure backlogged tax refunds, Social Security checks, Veterans benefits, Medicare appeals, and more for our neighbors. Virginians earned these benefits, and all Virginians deserve to actually receive what they are owed. I encourage any resident of the Seventh District who is having an issue getting a response from one of our federal agencies — like the IRS, Social Security Administration, or VA — to reach out to my team.”
