CAA Swimming And Diving Weekly Awards - Oct. 4

 UNCW swept the first CAA swimming and diving honors for the 2022-23 season. UNCW sophomore Aidan Duffy was named Men’s Swimmer of the Week and Seahawks’ freshman Ethan Badrian was chosen as the Men’s Diver of the Week. UNCW freshman Maura Schoppa received Women’s Swimmer of the Week accolades, while UNCW senior Courtney Klausen was selected as the Women’s Diver of the Week.

 

CAA Men’s Swimmer of the Week

Aidan Duffy, So., UNCW (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman)

 

Duffy recorded three first-place finishes in UNCW’s 222-52 victory over William & Mary last Sunday. The sophomore captured the 100 breast (57.14), 200 breast (2:04.83) and 200 IM (1:53.07), and swam a leg on the Seahawks’ 200 medley relay team that placed second. Duffy opened the season with a pair of second-place efforts in the 100 (55.95) and 200 breast (2:06.78) and a third-place outing in the 200 IM (1:51.66) in a narrow setback to Army.

 

CAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week

Maura Schoppa, Fr., UNCW (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford)

Schoppa made a big impact in her collegiate debut, posting four first-place finishes and two second-place outings in her six races. The Seahawks’ freshman claimed both the 100 (50.52) and 200 (1:49.69) free to help UNCW defeat Army, 163-137, in its opening meet. Against SEC foe Tennessee, she took gold in the 100 fly (56.39) and was second in the 50 free (23.96). Schoppa capped last weekend by winning the 100 free (52.01) and finishing second in the 200 free (1:52.89) as the Seahawks defeated defending CAA champion William & Mary, 199-95.

CAA Men’s Diver of the Week

Ethan Badrian, Fr., UNCW (Silver Springs, Md./James Hubert Blake)

 

Badrian opened his collegiate career with three first-place performances and a second-place finish during UNCW’s three meets. The freshman captured the 3-meter competition (320.20) and was second on the 1-meter board (272.35) against Army. He followed with a season-high 283.05 in the 1-meter against William & Mary and tallied 306.30 on the 3-meter.

CAA Women’s Diver of the Week

Courtney Klausen, Sr., UNCW (Concord, Calif./Carondelet)

 

Klausen got her season off to a solid start over UNCW’s first three meets. The reigning CAA Diver of the Year recorded a season-best 283.0 on the 3-meter board to earn third place against Tennessee. She finished atop the standings on the 1-meter board against William & Mary with a score of 262.0, and placed third in the 3-meter versus Army with a score of 220.10.
