Hofstra Edges UNCW 46-45 in First Round of CAA Tournament Behind Double-Double from Jaylen Hines

Eighth-seeded Hofstra edged ninth-seeded UNCW 46-45 in a thrilling first round matchup to tip off the 2022 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women’s Basketball Championship presented by Primis.

Jaylen Hines lifted the Pride behind her seventh double-double of the season. Hines matched a season-high with 22 points, including eight of the Pride’s 11 points in the fourth quarter. The redshirt senior forward added a game-high 11 rebounds in the contest.

The fourth quarter proved to be the difference in the contest as the teams entered the period locked at 35. Hines scored the first eight points in the quarter for the Pride before Sorelle Ineza splashed home the eventual game-winner in the final minute.

 

UNCW scored the first five points in the fourth before Hofstra responded with a 6-0 spurt to take a 41-40 lead with 4:20 remaining in the contest. UNCW’s Sierra DaCosta tied the game at 43 following a free throw with two minutes remaining before Ineza’s three put Hofstra ahead for the final time. Allie Best cut the deficit to one with 36 seconds remaining, and UNCW had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but the Seahawks came up short.

 

Hofstra created separation in the third following an 8-0 run that gave the Pride 32-25 advantage. UNCW didn’t shy away, scoring five straight to cut the deficit before ending the quarter with the final five points to tie the game heading into the fourth.

 

It was a tale of two quarters in the first half as Hofstra jumped out to an early lead in the first, before UNCW settled in a flipped the script in the second.

 

The Pride opened the game on a 10-0 run and held UNCW without a field goal for the first 6:21 in the contest. Midway through the second, facing a 17-9 deficit, UNCW rallied off a 12-1 run to take its first lead in the game 21-18. Best capped the run with a three and scored nine points in the quarter, going 3-for-3 from deep. Ineza knocked down a three and recorded a steal, which led to a Rosi Nicholson as Hofstra took a 23-21 lead into the half.

 

Best paced the Seahawks with 14 points and matched a season-high with four made three-pointers. DaCosta joined her in double figures, scoring 11 points.
