Colonial Athletic Association issued the following announcement on Oct. 14
The 2020-21 season was a year of firsts for the Elon men’s basketball program: a first appearance in the CAA title game; the first 8-seed to appear in the conference final.
The Phoenix is aiming for the most significant first in 2021-22, as much of last year’s core returns and is joined by reinforcements who were sidelined a year ago.
Hunter McIntosh was a second-team All-CAA honoree a year ago with 15.7 ppg, while Darius Burford averaged nearly nine points a night in a CAA all-rookie campaign. Both players were just shy of 36% from distance on the year. Hunter Woods and Kris Wooten add scoring depth for the Phoenix, as both contributed in the scoring column in addition to Woods’ 6.8 rpg.
Elon regains the services of Jerald Gillens-Butler, whose season was cut short due to injury, and Zac Ervin, who missed the entire year. In addition to the players returning from injury, Mike Schrage adds a pair of major-conference transfers in Missouri’s Torrance Watson and Mississippi State’s Andrew Junkin.
The non-conference schedule is nothing short of a gauntlet, as Elon opens the season at Florida before a November trip to the Charleston Classic. The Phoenix will open the tournament against West Virginia before playing either Marquette or Ole Miss and then a third game at the venue. A trip to North Carolina awaits in December.
