Department of Aviation issued the following announcement on July
ICON Aircraft, maker of the light sport amphibious aircraft known as the A5, plans to certify the aircraft in the primary category as a way to boost international sales.
The primary category is recognized globally as a standard for aircraft intended for personal or pleasure use. While they can be used for pilot instruction, primary category aircraft can’t be used as for-hire operations.
Warren Curry, vice president for sales and product development, said his company forecasts strong sales potential outside of the North American market, but the “patchwork of light aircraft regulations in other countries” has made it difficult to close some deals.
At yesterday’s opening of AirVenture 2021, ICON Aircraft debuted one of its three new appearance packages – this one in bright lime green. While it’s designed to be a VFR-only fun flier, A5 buyers have been requesting an autopilot option. To meet that demand, ICON will begin offering a version featuring the Garmin G3X autopilot.
The A5 will be offered in three versions ranging in price from $359,000 to $399,000.
