Congressman Rob Wittman announced on Apr. 20 that the Secretary of the Navy has formally received and is reviewing his proposal to name the next Ford-class aircraft carrier (CVN-84) the USS Yorktown in honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The review of this proposal comes as the United States approaches a major milestone in its history, with some leaders seeking ways to commemorate the nation’s founding. The suggested name aims to connect past achievements with future naval operations.
In a letter responding to Wittman’s earlier request, the Secretary called naming CVN-84 USS Yorktown “a profoundly symbolic act” that would “bridge the birth of the republic with its future” and serve as “a powerful testament to the enduring legacy of the U.S. Navy.” The Secretary also confirmed that Wittman’s recommendation “has been formally received” and “will be given full and earnest consideration.”
Wittman said, “Yorktown represents the moment our nation secured its independence — and the legacy of American strength that followed,” adding he is encouraged by how seriously his suggestion is being taken as preparations for America’s 250th anniversary continue. He further stated, “As we look to the next generation of naval power, there is no more fitting name to carry forward into America’s next 250 years.”
Wittman has served in Congress representing Virginia’s 1st district since replacing Jo Ann Davis in 2007, according to the official congressional biography. Before serving in Congress, he was a member of both Virginia’s House of Delegates and Westmoreland County Board of Supervisors from 2006 to 2007 according to his office. Born in Washington, D.C., Wittman is now age 64 and lives in Montross as reported by The Washington Post. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981 according to Virginia Tech Magazine.
Observers will be watching for further updates from Navy leadership regarding whether CVN-84 will bear this historic name.
