The ICON A5 Introduction to Flight Program traveled to King & Queen Elementary School on Wednesday, April 20 to teach students about aviation and careers in the field. The free aviation education program, which is offered by the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV), brings an amphibious light sport aircraft on a trailer to Virginia schools, career days, community events, airports and other locations.

King & Queen Elementary School was holding its annual career day and invited the ICON A5 Introduction to Flight Team along with several other presenters to the school. A total of 114 students from grades 1-6 attended the ICON presentation and had a hands on learning experience inside the aircraft.

“I would highly recommend the ICON A5 program to other schools,” counselor Pia Holmes said. “I’m a person who believes that anytime there is an opportunity for a child to get that hands on experience, it’s a fantastic idea. Being able to have the ICON come to our school in a rural area was great.”

PR and Education Coordinator David Halstead led the presentation and explained the flight controls while each student was seated in the aircraft. Halstead discussed how airplanes fly and answered questions from the students and teachers.

PR and Education Manager Betty Wilson talked with the students following their time in the ICON A5 about what they learned and the many careers available in aviation. The DOAV staff provided wooden balsa airplanes for the students and aviation calendars for teachers and staff.

If you are interested in having this aircraft visit your school or event, please contact Betty Wilson at the Virginia Department of Aviation for all the details.
