A new soccer club at Highland Springs High School is helping multilingual learners feel more connected to their school community, according to Assistant Principal JoAna Smith on Apr. 22.
The initiative aims to support students who speak multiple languages by providing them with opportunities for social interaction and academic growth. This effort reflects Henrico County Public Schools’ focus on cultural responsiveness and positive learning experiences, as described on the official website.
Smith said the club was created as a way to build intentional relationships with students. “Part of that is you have to be intentional with relationships with students and make connections with them,” she said. She added that participation in the club has improved attendance, behavior, and grades among its members. The program also sets higher academic standards than other extracurricular activities at the school. “I want to prepare them, not just to play but also to go on to college, where they have to maintain a GPA and attendance,” Smith said.
Students like Juan Mejia appreciate the opportunity for a break during the school day. “It’s a different experience, because it’s in the middle of the school day, so it’s nice to have a moment out of class to enjoy what we like,” Mejia said. Josue Martinez shared similar feelings about playing alongside peers who speak his native language: “They’re giving opportunities to people who don’t get that many opportunities.”
The program received funding from the Henrico Education Foundation for equipment and related expenses after Smith participated in an action-based research cohort focused on improving student engagement strategies. Similar clubs exist at other schools in Henrico County Public Schools—including one recognized by an REB Award for teaching excellence—according to information provided by the official website.
Henrico County Public Schools serves students throughout Henrico County, Virginia—adjacent to Richmond—and operates under Superintendent Amy Cashwell’s leadership. The district has adopted “The right to achieve. The support to succeed” as its motto and continues its commitment through programs like this soccer club designed for multilingual learners.
