Henrico County has been recognized by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) with the Best of the Best Water Taste Test award. The accolade was given after a series of taste tests conducted by experts in the water industry. The competition saw participation from 26 localities across the United States and Canada, each having previously won their local AWWA section taste-test contests. Only those without health department violations in the past year were eligible for this national event.

The judging took place at AWWA’s annual conference in Denver on June 11, where samples were evaluated based on odor, flavor, and aftertaste. Henrico emerged victorious over Taylorsville Bennion Valley in Utah and Ames, Iowa.

“Henrico County and its employees strive every day to provide outstanding services to our residents. The award from the American Water Works Association is an example of that and a credit to the professionalism and dedication of our entire Public Utilities team,” said County Manager John A. Vithoulkas. “This is the standard of public water service that we’re working to ensure for every Henrico resident.”

Henrico’s Department of Public Utilities serves over 100,000 customers countywide. Approximately two-thirds receive water from Henrico’s facility on Three Chopt Road, while others are supplied by Richmond’s water treatment plant. The award specifically recognized water from Henrico’s treatment facility and distribution system.

Public Utilities recently published its annual Water Quality Report for 2024, which includes test results from both Henrico and Richmond systems. Regular testing is conducted at more than 150 locations to ensure comprehensive coverage.
