Leila Abou-Assi, a substitute registered nurse with School Health Services, has been recognized as the latest “Yay of the Day” honoree by Henrico County Public Schools. Superintendent Amy Cashwell recently presented her with this acknowledgment.

Kristin Montgomery, who nominated Abou-Assi, highlighted her willingness to cover any location within the county and her support in opening a clinic for the school year during a vacancy. Montgomery said, “Leila is a substitute RN for school health and is willing to cover any location within the county, including help opening a clinic for the school year due to a vacancy. Covering a clinic that you don’t normally work in is not easy, as every school and clinic is set up differently, all the way down to the phone system. Leila always remains positive and is just a ray of sunshine even on the toughest days of covering a clinic.”

Montgomery shared an example from one of Abou-Assi’s recent assignments: “Leila recently covered at one of my schools and stated, ‘If we had clinic bingo, I would win today!’ This is a great example of her personality – no complaints, just a positive spin on a challenging day. This particular school has a busy clinic and in addition to the normal day-to-day expected visits she had a couple of significant injuries, a 911 call and even cleaned dog feces from a student’s shoe. The admin stated, ‘She did AMAZING! We are so grateful to have her.’ Another message from that same day was received from a parent stating, ‘Good evening! I just wanted to report that (student’s) arm was, in fact broken and to thank you all for your quick response. Especially the substitute nurse for the day, who did a great job patching him up but seems to have chosen the worst day to come to (school)! Again, thanks for the quick response. It was a clean break and he’s home resting.'”

Montgomery concluded by saying: “Leila is an amazing nurse and Henrico County students are so fortunate to be in her care and I’m grateful to have her as a coworker!”
