Henrico County Public Library promotes National Poetry Month with reading challenge and book lists

Henrico County Public Library announced on April 15 its celebration of National Poetry Month, encouraging community members to participate in the Science and Sonnets Reading Challenge and explore a curated selection of poetry collections and novels in verse.

The initiative aims to foster a love for poetry among readers of all ages while highlighting the library’s role in promoting literacy, learning, and community engagement. In addition to suggesting participation in the reading challenge, the library provided a list of recommended poetry titles for children, teens, and adults.

Selections include picture books such as “In Praise of Mystery” by Ada Limón and “Remember” by Joy Harjo; verse novels like “And Then, Boom!” by Lisa Fipps for kids; teen favorites including “Ain’t Burned All the Bright” by Jason Reynolds; and adult works such as Marie Howe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning collection. The announcement featured original rhyming verses celebrating poetry’s appeal: “April’s a time for poetry: Rhyming couplets, verse that’s free. All types and kinds are fun to read; They’re the words our spirits need.”

Henrico County Public Library enhances community life through offerings like homework help, tax assistance, job search support, meeting spaces for groups of different sizes, mobile library services to retirement facilities and day care centers, as well as facilities certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program according to the official website.
