Henrico County Government reported on February 6, 2026, that a group of venerable monks participating in the Walk for Peace arrived in Fredericksburg as they continue their journey to Washington, D.C. The monks’ trek spans 2,300 miles across eight states and has drawn thousands of supporters along their route.
According to Henrico County Government’s official X account on February 6, “Venerable monks on the Walk for Peace reached Fredericksburg on Friday, putting them another day closer to their final destination of Washington, D.C. Their 2,300-mile trek across eight states has attracted thousands of well-wishers along the way.”
In recognition of the monks’ efforts, the Henrico County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation acknowledging the significance of their pilgrimage. As stated in a post dated February 6: “This pilgrimage comes at a critical time when communities across our nation face rising mental health challenges, divisions, and global uncertainty,” Henrico County Board of Supervisors said Tuesday in a proclamation to the monks.
Board Chair Roscoe D. Cooper III formally presented spiritual leader Bhikkhu Pannakara with both the proclamation and small gifts during a lunch event held at Virginia Randolph campus. The government’s X account noted on February 6: “Board of Supervisors Chair Roscoe D. Cooper III presented spiritual leader Bhikkhu Pannakara with the proclamation and small gifts during a welcome lunch at the Campus of Virginia Randolph.”
Henrico County is served by one public school district—Henrico County Public Schools—which enrolled over 50,000 students during the 2023-24 academic year (source). Deep Run High School had the highest enrollment among all schools in the county that year (source). Black students comprised the largest ethnic group within Henrico schools at nearly 36% of total enrollment (source), reflecting some aspects of diversity present in local educational institutions.
