Henrico County Government has highlighted new developments at Wilton Farms, focusing on sustainable building practices and community growth in Varina. The tweets, posted on September 25, 2025, feature perspectives from local leaders and details about a new initiative involving Henrico County Public Schools.

In a statement posted that day, Tyrone Nelson commented on the county’s approach to development: “There’s a balance in Varina. We want to create places where people can live, work, and play and enjoy life, but we don’t want to knock down every tree and destroy nature while we build what we think is community,” Tyrone Nelson said. “I think community will be formed here.” (September 25, 2025).

Another tweet outlined the requirements for buildings participating in the living building challenge: “Structures taking on the living building challenge must meet criteria in the seven ‘petals,’ or categories, to qualify: Health & Happiness, Water, Place, Energy, Equity, Beauty and Materials. Essentially, the building must give back to the environment more than it takes away.” (September 25, 2025).

Further information was provided about the history of Wilton Farms: “The property at Wilton Farms was originally proposed for mixed-use development before Henrico bought the property in 2019. Together with Henrico County Public Schools, the idea for a living building challenge structure for students quickly began to form.” (September 25, 2025).

Henrico County Public Schools District is the sole school district serving Henrico County. During the 2023-24 academic year, it enrolled approximately 50,464 students across its schools (source). Deep Run High School reported the highest enrollment among all county schools with 2,039 students during that period (source). The district saw a slight increase in total enrollment compared to previous years (source). Black students represented the largest ethnic group within Henrico County schools during this time frame (source). Holladay Elementary School had notable pre-kindergarten enrollment numbers as well (source).

These initiatives reflect ongoing efforts by Henrico County Government and its public school system to integrate sustainability into educational infrastructure while considering both environmental impact and community needs.
