Henrico County Government approves canal acquisition and new medical transport service

Henrico County Government announced on September 23, 2025, that its Board of Supervisors approved multiple resolutions impacting local infrastructure and services.

In a post dated September 23, 2025, the county stated: “The Board approved a resolution for the acquisition from CSX of about 65 acres & a 5-mile segment of the historic Kanawha Canal. The county also will acquire three bridges from CSX & assume maintenance of a fourth bridge on the property.”

A follow-up post on the same date detailed financial and usage plans for the property: “Henrico will pay $1 for the property; the county plans to improve the bridges to enhance access for emergency vehicles and to use the property for recreational purposes.”

Additionally, Henrico County Government reported another board decision: “The Board approved a resolution that allows Virgin Med Transportation Inc. to operate a medical transport service in the county.”

Henrico County is home to Henrico County Public Schools District, which enrolled over 50,000 students during the 2023-24 school year according to state education data (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Deep Run High School had the highest enrollment among local schools with more than 2,000 students (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home). Demographically, Black students made up nearly 36% of district enrollment in that period (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home), while overall student numbers saw a slight increase compared to previous years (https://www.doe.virginia.gov/home).
