Henrico County Government has announced the completion of a $4.6 million renovation project at Three Lakes Park, marking its first major upgrade since the 1990s.

In a post on September 10, 2025, Henrico County Government stated, “This $4.6 million project is Three Lakes Park’s first major upgrade since the 1990s. The center closed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and has used those five years to intentionally plan for the future use by both visitors and its critter residents.” The tweet highlights that planning for these renovations began after the park’s closure in response to the pandemic.

A follow-up message from the same day detailed enhancements to animal care and educational programming: “The animal care staff is eager to share the important roles that Virginia-native reptiles, amphibians, fish and insects play in ecosystems throughout the county. Guests will be able to visit 25 species such as a musk turtle, grass shrimp and Ursula the American eel.”

For additional details on renovations and upcoming events at Three Lakes Park, Henrico County Government provided further information: “For more information on the renovations and events: https://t.co/jYGZlStd8V”.

Three Lakes Park is located within Henrico County—a region served by a single public school district that enrolled over 50,000 students during the 2023-24 academic year (Virginia Department of Education). The county’s schools have seen stable enrollment numbers with only minor changes from previous years. Black students comprised nearly 36% of this population during that period, making them the largest ethnic group in local schools.

The upgrades at Three Lakes Park come after several years of planning following disruptions caused by COVID-19 closures in 2020.
