Henrico County Division of Fire recently conducted its second Girls on Fire camp, an initiative designed to introduce middle-school girls to lifesaving skills and potential careers in firefighting. The event was highlighted in a Facebook post.
According to the Henrico County Division of Fire, the Girls on Fire initiative seeks to expose young girls to the firefighting profession and encourage them to consider public safety careers traditionally dominated by men.
“We’re just trying to plant the seed that, ‘Hey, this is a cool profession. It’s something that you should look into, and it may be something that you’re interested in,'” said Lt. Ronny Martin in the Facebook post by Henrico County Division of Fire. “So if they go home and just be excited about what they learned today, then my goal has been reached.”
The camp spanned three days and welcomed more than 80 new and returning participants who engaged in hands-on training with firefighting tools and equipment at the Fire Training Facility on Woodman Road.
In addition to using equipment, campers practiced CPR and other emergency response techniques, providing them with basic lifesaving knowledge in a realistic training environment.
The Henrico County Division of Fire provides fire protection, emergency medical services, and safety education for Henrico County, Virginia, serving the community through prevention, response, and professional development programs.
