Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) has announced the second annual Regional Recovery Day, a free event scheduled for September 3, in partnership with Chesterfield, Hanover, and Richmond. The event aims to provide resources and support for those affected by substance use disorder.
According to HCPS, the Regional Recovery Day will take place on Wednesday, September 3, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. The event will feature presentations from speakers, interactive breakout sessions, and a community resource fair. Attendees can participate in “REVIVE!” training focused on opioid overdose response and naloxone use. Additional educational and support activities are designed to offer resources and guidance for individuals and families affected by substance use. The initiative seeks to raise awareness and connect the community with available support services.
Regional Recovery Day coincides with National Recovery Month and will include a keynote address by Dr. Stephen Loyd. Loyd will share his experiences with substance use disorder and recovery; he is in long-term recovery and serves as vice president of the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners. His story inspired a character in the miniseries “Dopesick.” According to a press release by Henrico County, the event will also feature a panel of residents in recovery and two breakout sessions: one for the general public on supporting loved ones with substance use disorders, and another for judges, police, and attorneys on recovery within the criminal justice system.
Henrico Board of Supervisors Chair Dan Schmitt said that “Regional Recovery Day shares a message of understanding and hope,” emphasizing that it provides support for individuals as well as their families.
