Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) has announced the continuation of its Henrico HEROES program, which is actively recruiting adult mentors. The initiative offers three remaining training sessions for parents, guardians, and community members interested in supporting students during the 2025-26 school year.
According to HCPS, the Henrico HEROES program seeks adult mentors to meet with assigned students weekly for 30 to 45 minutes from October through May. Mentors will also participate in a program kickoff and an end-of-year celebration. To become a mentor, applicants must complete an application, undergo a background check, and attend a two-hour training session. Training options include virtual sessions on September 13 and 20, and an in-person session on September 17 at the Oak Avenue Complex.
The program aims to provide quality mentoring by fostering one-to-one relationships and community support that help youth reach their full potential and make responsible decisions. Volunteers are encouraged to commit to mentoring a student for at least one school year. Registration instructions are available for those interested. The program operates across multiple schools, including 18 elementary schools such as Adams and Baker, 11 middle schools like Elko and Moody, and high schools including Deep Run, Freeman, Godwin, and J.R. Tucker.
HCPS serves more than 330,000 residents across Henrico County, Virginia, operating 74 schools and program centers reflecting the county’s geographic and social diversity. The division is recognized for academic excellence and innovative programs guided by its strategic plan “Journey to 2030,” which emphasizes academic achievement, supportive learning environments, student health, and staff development. HCPS aims to empower every learner through engaging experiences that prepare students for future careers and personal growth. The division is led by Superintendent Dr. Amy E. Cashwell and overseen by a five-member elected School Board representing the county’s magisterial districts.
