Wendy Dorman, a custodial and maintenance worker at Brookland Middle School, has been recognized as the latest “Yay of the Day” honoree. Superintendent Amy Cashwell recently presented the honor to Dorman at Brookland.
Several colleagues praised Dorman for her commitment to maintaining a clean and safe environment at the school and for her positive interactions with students and staff. Melanie Mastin, one of the nominators, said, “She keeps Brookland Middle School spotless, safe, and welcoming. What truly sets her apart is the way she invests in the students and staff at Brookland Middle School. She knows our students by name, greets them daily, and encourages them to make good choices. She is equally supportive of staff, always willing to lend a hand, share a smile, and make everyone’s day a little brighter. Wendy’s dedication goes beyond the school day, covering for other custodians and going to EVERY sporting event at Brookland Middle School. She celebrates our students, supports them, and makes them feel seen. It’s hard to put into words just how much influence she has in our school. Brookland would not be the same without her!”
Another nominator, Matt Sutton, noted Dorman’s thoroughness: “She has such attention to detail; she keeps our school clean and has a smile on her face while doing so. She cleans the windows and ledges before school starts; she’s in every cafeteria; she responds to emergency situations quickly.”
Tiera Washington added: “She always goes over and beyond to help out. Amazing worker!”
Woodrow Crews highlighted Dorman’s efforts despite personal challenges: “Despite having a shoulder injury, she hand-washed every classroom front door, window and sidewalks before school started by herself. She stepped in with an administrator to help a student that was losing their cool, volunteering to walk the student to class and distracting them from the argument they wanted to have.”
